Quick Coupler Tips
Quick Coupler Tips
Quick couplers are crucial tools that allow you to rapidly switch between your heavy equipment attachments. Using them the right way can help reduce the risk of injury and damage on the job, and they’ll make your operation more efficient. Follow our tips and best practices to make sure you are taking proper precautions when using quick couplers on your next project.
Ensure your operators are properly trainedÂ
One of the most important ways to avoid accidents related to your quick coupler or heavy equipment attachments is to thoroughly instruct your operators in their use. Everyone working with a quick coupler and their supervisors should understand how to conduct visual inspections, the procedures for engaging attachments, and the methods of evaluating and testing connections. They need to be able to quickly recognize the look and feel of abnormal operation, so they can stop using the coupler until the issue is investigated.
Use cautionary labels
The majority of excavator and quick coupler manufacturers provide warning labels that remind operators not to use the coupler without its safety pin. Warning labels have to be placed in the cab where the operator can clearly see them, as well as on the dipper arm. These labels should be inspected daily and replaced if they are damaged or illegible.
Only use approved attachments
It’s important to not operate heavy equipment attachments that exceed the limits outlined by the excavator or quick coupler manufacturers. For example, not all quick couplers are approved for the use of hydraulic breakers or other attachments. Always check your owner’s manual or consult your manufacturer if you’re not sure about a particular attachment and its compatibility with your coupler.
Inspect your quick couplers daily
We recommend visually checking your quick couplers prior to beginning work each day to ensure that the safety pin is in the correct position. With many couplers the operator will need to manually inspect the safety pin. With fully automated systems the operator may be able to visually verify that the safety pin is in position from inside the machine’s cab. Operators should also make sure that there are no visual signs of damage. If any physical damage is noticed, the operator should let their supervisor know and not use the quick coupler.
Be careful when changing buckets
Changing and testing buckets and other heavy equipment attachments should only be done in designated, clearly defined areas to prevent damage or injury on the jobsite. Once the tool is attached, secured, and checked, and the safety pin is in place, the quick coupler should be shaken vigorously to ensure a secure connection.
Remove quick couplers the right way
Do not attempt to take quick couplers off your machine while a bucket or attachment is still connected. Doing so may damage both the coupler and the attachment. To remove it properly, first lower the coupler onto a structure at level height. Release all hydraulic pressure from the circuit and make sure that the machine is turned off. To avoid any contamination, immediately plug the quick coupler hoses and pipe work of the machine after disconnecting. Before placing it in storage, remove all dirt and debris from the operating mechanism.
